Hello Neighbors,

Legislation of Interest

    • ART Transit Advisory Board O-16-12 (Sanchez, Harris) creates a special private-interest transit advisory board for business and property owners only along the ART route. The purpose of the Board would be to develop short term solutions to issues that arise during construction of ART and to form long term strategies for coordinating operation of the line with business activities up and down the Central Avenue corridor and on Louisiana to the Uptown Transit Station.  We already have a citizens’ Transit Advisory Board.  I encourage all citizens to participate in our TAB, including business and property owners. I oppose a separate Board that benefits a specific class of residents. This bill is on the agenda for the meeting this coming Monday, May 2.

  • APD Retention Program R-16-38 (Gibson, Benton) directs the Administration to defer and discontinue any retention incentive programs and salary increases for APD officers higher than the rank of Commander (Major, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, and Chief) unless APD has made measurable and sustained progress towards compliance with the DOJ Court Approved Settlement Agreement (CASA).  Compliance would be measured as a percentage of completion of the CASA requirements within the established deadlines, as reported by the DOJ appointed Monitor over the two most recent reporting periods.  The Resolution also directs the Chief of Police to designate a Project Manager to oversee compliance with the CASA and provide updates on these efforts at each City Council meeting.  This bill is on this Monday’s, May 2 Council agenda.
  • AFD Minimum Staffing R-16-41 (Benton, Lewis) establishes the standards for staffing of firefighters within the Albuquerque Fire Department (AFD) apparatus, units, and squads to help maintain AFD’s Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 1 rating. The ISO Class 1 rating is, in part, a reflection of AFD’s resource capacity and ability to respond to emergencies.   That rating allows for a reduction of property insurance premiums for City residents and businesses.  This resolution is on this Monday’s, May 2 Council agenda.
  • Ballot propositions regarding our existing Open and Ethical Elections public financing of City elections P-15-12, P-15-13 (Harris) and P-16-2 (Davis): I generally support changes that would make the Mayor’s race fair and competitive financially between publicly-financed and privately-financed candidates.
  • North Corridor MRA R-16-49 (Benton, by request) designates The North Corridor Metropolitan Redevelopment Area between the railroad tracks and 4th Street from Granite Avenue to the city limit and directs the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency to prepare an MRA Plan for the area.  This bill will have its first hearing at Council’s Land Use Planning & Zoning Committee (LUPZ) on Wednesday, May 11.  The LUPZ meeting begins at 5:00 pm in the Council Committee Room, 9th floor of City Hall.
