CURB APPEAL HOME OF THE MONTH

A grain of sand has been turned into a pearl at 314 14th Street NW. IMG_0313Barbara Geary and Jose’ Granados found this home to rent through a friend in November 2013. Their landlord, Chuck Jurich, had graduated from UNM and accepted a teaching position in Alaska. He had been trying to sell the house for some time, but because of its condition and major plumbing/sewer problems, resorted to renting it. Barbara and Jose’ saw the potential of the little house, rented it, and began addressing the sewer issue through the City. Diane Dolan, the systems analyst for our District II City Councilor, Ike Benton, helped Barbara get the sewer issue fixed in February this year. Barbara and Jose’ entered into a purchase contract with their landlord, and have been transforming this previously dilapidated structure into a colorful jewel in our neighborhood. Wall by wall, the exterior windows have been painted white, with coral trim accents, and the wall shingles a pleasant shade of blue. Gutters with rain barrels at the downspouts have been installed, plus the landscape has been totally cleaned up and planted. The back yard is flourishing, with four raised vegetable beds, plus a patio area is planned in the future. Although, it’s already quite livable already, Barbara has plans to spiff up the interior as well.

Jose’ and Barbara met in the early 80’s while working the Scarboro Renaissance Faire. Jose’ still works the Renaissance circuit, acting the parts of Don Juan and Miguel. Barbara moved on to do plays in numerous cities over the years, including Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Their relationship evolved during this time, from work associates to friends, and ultimately a couple four years ago. Apparently, Albuquerque must have left a good impression on Barbara, because after acting and directing in New York, Los Angeles, and other cities, the decision was made to settle here in Albuquerque. Barbara recently finished directing the play, “The Whipping Man” at the Vortex Theater, was just cast in “Enchanted April” with the Mother Road Theater Company, September 25th – October 11th, and will be directing a not to be missed “A Christmas Carol” at the Albuquerque Little Theater, December 4th – 24th.

The Downtown Neighborhoods Association welcomes Barbara and Jose’ back to Albuquerque. We appreciate and thank them for everything they have done to transform their home into what has become a jewel in our neighborhood.
