Come Together Workshop — Loom Making & Freestyle Weaving

Come Together Workshop Series:
Freestyle & Found Object Weaving
on a Hand-Made Frame Loom
with Susan Tische
Saturdays —
Feb. 28th, Mar. 7th, 14th & 21st
Noon – 3 pm
Ages 10 and up
Cost (Call 247-1172 for cost information for this event).  All Materials Included

Participants will make a pin loom using sturdy discarded (repurposed) picture frames. While this style of loom may be easy to construct and appear simple, it offers the opportunity to experiment with complex form, pattern, textures and mixed materials.
Many materials can be woven into the basic structure, while others can be knotted or tied. We can use yarn—of course! But what about fabric, beads, paper, feathers, dried organic matter — such as grass, sticks, leaves — or ribbon, leather, bamboo, plastic, bones, shells, fringe, found objects, metal and other items that are normally discarded? Fluffy, flat, shiny, tiny, smooth or rough—it all can be used.Freestyle weaving is about personal expression. Children can enjoy the art form with little encouragement from adults as the tactile quality of materials will instantly engage them while also sharpening their eye-hand coordination, motor skills and help to focus their attention. For adults, weaving allows time for experimentation with little restriction or rules—this is different from everyday life or work–and will bring out the hidden artist. The idea of the hand-made item is truly embraced and there are no mistakes. Progress not perfection is a good motto to remember while weaving. Creating a piece of our own is a wonderful feeling. Weavings can become wall hangings, pillow panels, table coverings, patches, purses, scarves or jewelry?

Susan Tische received a Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of New Mexico and enjoyed a career as a professional jeweler for 27 years. Now she engages in many different forms of art and mixed media including collage, printmaking, fiber arts, sewing , encaustic and painting.

presents at OFFCenter
Spirit Doll Making Workshop
Sat., March 14
11 am – 1:30 pm
Call 247-1172 to reserve your space now!
Cost: FREE, All Materials included

The workshop will demonstrate methods for creating small imaginative dolls from natural materials, branches, seeds, grasses, found objects and fabric. Join us to bring to life your own spirit doll.
This workshop is in conjunction with “A Wall of Dolls”, earth spirit figures and fetishes, a Rainbow exhibit partnering with Women and Creativity 2015 and taking place at Off Center Arts,
March 6- 28.

Submit your spirit doll for OFFCenter’s “Art of the Earth” during April — a non-juried exhibit celebrating Earth Month and the natural world with works created from natural materials.

“The Earth Spirit Dolls” emerged at an Apronista Art Collective Retreat in the NM mountains. Seven women created small evocative female figures from nature’s art materials, referencing ancient protective “pocket” dolls. The figures seemed to breathe and awaken to offer wisdom and healing. They dedicated the dolls to honoring, healing and safeguarding women and the earth. Lately the Apronistas invited the Rainbow Artists to join in creating 100 earth spirit dolls for a March Exhibit highlighting International Women’s Month.” The “Wall of Dolls” came into being as a fundraising project for the Rainbow Artists and is partnered with Women and Creativity 2015.
