Downtown Neighborhoods Association

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Monthly Meeting

February 4, 2015

The February 2015 meeting of the Downtown Neighborhoods Association was held at the Harwood Art Center, pursuant to prior approval.

Board members in attendance: Miriam Ortiz y Pino, David McCain, Margaret Connealy, Reba Eagles, Dick Deichsel, Chan Graham, Sue Brych, Sandy Gregory,

Ric Higginbotham, Fernando Pizarro, Jeni Pope and Robert Bello. Two board members were absent. (The board currently has only fourteen members due to the resignation of Bob Yuhas on February 1.) Seven other neighbors also attended. Sign in sheets are on file.

Board Chair Reba Eagles called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Introductions were made. The agenda was approved. The January 7 minutes were approved.

Dick Deichsel gave the Treasurer’s Report. For the month of January, there was $1810 in income, including $1500 from the County grant (the last of those funds) and $185 in book sales. Expenses totaled $96.82. The January 31 balance was $27,093.56. The Treasurer’s Report was approved and is on file.

There was no police report.

Greg and Angie Smith described the Velvet Coffeehouse, their new café in the Patio Market on the southeast corner of the Old Town Plaza. They are serving gourmet coffees and pastry and plan to add sandwiches. Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Greg Miller of MRWM Landscape Architects reported that the plans for Mary Fox Park had received a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Landmarks and Urban Conservation Commission. There will be no major change to the gazebo area and the play area will be increased in size toward 13th Street. Options were discussed for tables and shade structures. There was a consensus for including bicycle racks, lighting, traditional looking benches and shade structures with a rounded “wood” look and heavier shade (not slats).

Melissa and Al Stotts have lived at 614 Granite NW for 39 years. Their house is across Granite from Harwood and Escuela del Sol School. They are asking DNA to support their petition for permit parking on the south side of the 600 block of Granite. All 3 residents of the block have signed the petition. Melissa described the parking problems that occur every school day. She also reported that Escuela is planning to add grades 6-8 to the current K-5. Robert Bello will call for an email discussion and vote.

Robert reported that Laura Bruzesse has requested a variance of 1800 square feet for a lot split to her rental property at 1225 Roma NW. Her hearing before the Zoning Hearing Examiner is scheduled for Tuesday, February 17. Robert had no other information about the proposed variance. Miriam volunteered to contact Laura for more information and forward the information to the board.

Chan Graham announced that the history project books have sold out at Duran’s Pharmacy and the Albuquerque Museum. He will be on the Channel 4 news tonight discussing the tree project.

Dick Deichsel reviewed the 2015 budget. DNA has received a $5000 grant from the County for a survey of trees and the planting of trees on both sides of a demonstration block (both sides of a linear block). The winter 2015 newsletter cost $450. We need a written proposal from Harwood regarding their $3000 request. DNA will run a deficit in 2015 since there will be no tour this year.

Miriam announced that the Projects Committee would meet at her house on Monday, 2/16 at 6:30. Margaret said the Tree Committee would meet at her house on Monday, 2/9 at 6:30.

Sandy Gregory reviewed plans for the annual meeting on Wednesday, March 4, 7:00 at Hotel Blue (8th and Central). Rowan and Reba will handle food. Fernando will staff the membership table. Chan will describe the tree project and solicit volunteers for the May 16 survey of trees in DNA. The City Forester will give a presentation but it needs to be shorter than the half hour he is planning. Chan will have history project books for sale. Sue Brych will handle nominations for vacant board positions. So far Miriam and Bob Yuhas have said they will be leaving the board.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:35.

Respectfully submitted,

David McCain
