Bernalillo County – The Bernalillo County Arts Board, in partnership with ABQ Ride, invites artists to submit ideas for a sculpture for the historic Hiland Theater at 4800 Central Avenue SE. The Hiland Theater is owned by Bernalillo County and is currently home to the National Dance Institute of New Mexico.

“This Public Art project will be an exciting complement to the newly-renovated Hiland Theater and the entire neighborhood,” said District 3 Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins. “The project will focus on the legacy of Route 66 and the history of the Hiland so it’s a great opportunity for our local artists. We want to make sure people are aware of the project and the deadline for submissions.”

The City of Albuquerque’s Transit Department – ABQ Ride – is planning to construct a new bus shelter in front of the Hiland Theatre so artists will have a choice: they can propose a stand-alone sculpture or submit a proposal that combines the artwork with the new bus shelter.

The Bernalillo County Arts Board’s Artist Selection Committee will offer $1,000 stipends to as many as three finalists in the competition to assist them in their efforts. The established budget for the project is $120,000.
