Soaring the South Valley is an exciting upcoming event at Durand Open Space celebrating both birds and planes. In preparation for the event, we are re-establishing a trail into the bosque due to thinning work the Corps of Engineers recently completed that affected the trail. City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County Open Space are teaming up on March 22 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. for the trail building day, and we need your help. If you are available and interested in participating in the trail building day, please contact me for more information. Either way, we hope to see you for Soaring the South Valley, a wonderfully festive event that will keep you looking up.

Soaring the South Valley: Birds and Planes

April 20 from 8 a.m.—12 p.m. at Durand Open Space

4812 Isleta Blvd. SW (2 miles south of Rio Bravo Blvd.)

Durand Open Space was once home to Westernair Inc., an airplane maintenance business once owned by the Durand family. Small planes flew in for anything from engine repairs to paint jobs to reupholstery work. Today, the property commemorates more natural airborne creatures, birds.

Bernalillo County Open Space is working with a number of partners to organize a fun-filled family event celebrating both birds and planes. There will be a number of exciting things happening both on the ground and in the air include the following:

Ø Real planes will be displayed at the property;

Ø Guided Bird Walks featuring a new South Valley Bird Guide;

Ø Model planes will be featured, including ones that look just like those once owned by the Durand family;

Ø Bird Banding with wild birds in the bosque;

Ø Gliders plane demonstrations from Soaring Albuquerque; and

Ø Live Birds of Prey; and

Ø History of planes at Durand Open Space with Dick Durand and Albuquerque Historical Society.

Ø Birds of a Feather and other kids activities.

This event is organized in partnership with the New Mexico Ornithological Society and Central New Mexico Audubon Society.
