Don’t miss the Spring Equinox Solar Saturday!
Saturday, March 23rd, 2013, from 11AM to 1PM
Petroglyph National Monument Visitor Center Patio

The Visitor Center is located at Unser Blvd. and Western Trail on ABQ’s Westside.
There are no fees associated with this event, nor is registration required.

Please join Petroglyph National Monument and The Albuquerque Astronomical Society (TAAS) for another solar observation event marking the transition from one season to another. For all of human history people around the world have observed the motion of sunrises and sunsets moving from solstice to equinox to solstice to help plan their lives around seasonal change. Now we can do this same observation but with the addition of safe devices such as solar scopes that allow us to directly and safely view and study the sun in detail never before possible.

From 11AM to 1PM MDT, Petroglyph National Monument and TAAS will have both white light filtered, single stack, and double stacked hydrogen-alpha filtered solar scopes for viewing the sun safely. Children will also have the opportunity to learn about constellations through an activity with TAAS member Roger Kennedy, participate in an activity to make an ultraviolet detection bracelet, as well as learn about the sun through the magnetic sun hands on activities.

The Western National Parks Association bookstore located at the Visitor Center will also offer a 15% discount on astronomy related books during the event. Books including the Guide to Prehistoric Astronomy in the Southwest, by J. McKim Malville; Parks After Dark, by Rick Shaffer; Exploring the Night Sky with Binoculars, by David Chandler; and Glow in the Dark Constellations by C.E. Thompson and Randy Chewning will be available for purchase while supplies last.

No fees are associated with this program, and no reservations are required. For more information please call 505-899-0205 x.335.
