Dear Open Space Supporters,

This March Bernalillo County has scheduled many events to take advantages of and it is also time to apply for the Master Naturalist Program. Please see the attached Open Space Program of Events for a complete listing of the County’s Open Space activities this year. Master Naturalist Program

Accepting applications now until March 29

The training will take place this June and July at Bachechi Open Space (9521 Rio Grande Blvd. NW)

This program aims to instill the pursuit of lifelong learning and promote environmental stewardship. Participants enjoy a wide range of classes and hands-on experiences about the local environment totaling 55 hours of training and filed studies this June and July. Upon completion of the training, participants carry out a 40 hour service project. This quality program is free; however, it is limited to 25 participants. Junior Naturalist Summer Camp

Accepting applications now until March 22

The camp will take place from July 15-25 (Mondays-Thursdays) at Bachechi Open Space (9521 Rio Grande Blvd. NW)

Bernalillo County Open Space working with Master Naturalists is launching the first Junior Naturalist Summer Camp in New Mexico. Students will learn about the local environment and participate in hands-on activities related to ecology, local plant and animal life, geology, water in NM, nature observations and even more! Edible Landscapes

March 9 from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House (6029 Isleta Blvd. SW)

This workshop will cover garden basics and help you choose the best fruits, veggies, and herbs to build a beautiful, edible garden in your own yard. Nissa Patterson of Albuquerque Growing Gardens Team will present on her front yard garden project and how it has intrigued and impacted her community. Michael Reed of La Orilla Farm will present on permaculture design and concepts of “food forest.” Register for this free event at

Soil Science and Composting

March 16 from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House (6029 Isleta Blvd. SW)

Come to this workshop to understand how to determine what type of soil you have and how to build healthy soil and composting. Shawn Hardeman will cover soil science, what soil is made of and what the means to the backyard farmer. John Zarola will explain compost methods and compost building so that participants will be ready to begin at home. Register for this free event at

There’s Music in the Air

March 23 from 1-3 p.m. at Bachechi Open Space (9521 Rio Grande Blvd. NW)

Flutist and harpist, Bonnie Schmader, will be joined by other local musicians in exploring music and sound. Not only has the natural world inspired countless composers, but the very essence of music relies on sound waves traveling through the air. We will explore these connections through performance, demonstration and audience participation. No musical experience is necessary, but if you have an instrument, you’re encouraged to bring it with you! Register for this free event at

Cesar Chavez Day of Service

April 5 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Sanchez Farm Open Space (1180 Arenal Rd. SW)

The Recureda a Cesar Chavez Committee is organizing the 20th annual march on April 6 to and from the National Hispanic Cultural Center to educate the community about the life and work of the great American civil rights leader, Cesar Chavez. The festivities will begin the day before, on April 5, with a Day of Service at Sanchez Farm Open Space. Hundreds of students will learn about Cesar Chavez’s legacy and the importance of agriculture with hands-on activities and service projects. RCCC works with a number of partners including La Plazita Institute, FoodCorps and Bernalillo County Open Space.
