We have a number of events this coming November and opportunities to give your feedback about the types of workshops we offer. We value your opinion and hope you will chime in during the End of Year Celebration at Bachechi Open Space so that we can incorporate your suggestions in 2013. I’ll also be sending out a survey later in the month to give folks who cannot attend the celebration a chance to comment. For those participants interested in the Backyard Farming Series, we will have an additional celebration and open forum for feedback later in December at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House.

To register for the following events, please call 505-314-0398.

Advanced Composting

November 10 from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House

This final composting workshop will cover how to increase yield, efficiency, and general troubleshooting. This workshop is led by Master Composters.

Hoop House Covering

November 10 from 1 – 3:30 p.m. at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House

Last month, workshop participants constructed the frame for a hoop house to extend the growing season, which allows us to grow more food for the Roadrunner Food Bank. We are putting on the final touches this November 10 by installing the plastic cover. Please RSVP if you would like to help with this part of the hoop house construction.

Interpretive Walk and Native Planting

November 10 from 1 – 3 p.m. at Pajarito Open Space

Bernalillo County Open Space and the Pajarito Neighborhood Association invite the public to Pajarito Open Space to learn about the history of the area and plant native vegetation, creating wildlife habitat.

Guided Bird Walk

November 11 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Bachechi Open Space

Bachechi attracts a variety of birds due to a large range of microhabitats throughout the property. We will look for migrating fowl, songbirds and raptors.

Master Naturalist Poster Presentation and End of Year Celebration

November 16 from 5 -7:30 p.m. at Bachechi Open Space

From 5 – 6 p.m., we will start the evening with a celebration for the end of the Naturalist Series and other activities at Bachechi Open Space, which has been open for just one year. During the celebration, we will present the past year’s activities and opportunities at the property, as well as solicit ideas from participants for 2013 workshops and events. We will also hear from the featured photographer at the Environmental Education Building, Ariel Ives. Refreshment and light fare will be provided.

The second part of the evening will include the Master Naturalist Poster Presentation from 6-7:30 p.m. The Master Naturalist Program aims to instill the pursuit of life-long learning and promote environmental stewardship. Participants who attended the 2011 training have been actively working on a 40 hour service project dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources. This poster presentation is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the program and support these dedicated volunteers.

Families Exploring the Wonders of Nature

December 1 from 9 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Bachechi Open Space

Bernalillo County Open Space and The New Mexico Wonder of Learning Collaborative will be presenting this two-part workshop geared for families. The workshop will provide parents and guardians of young children with tools for deepening experiences in nature and fostering the desire to explore. This workshop is free; however, space is limited to 25 adults. The first workshop is for adults only and the second day (March 2, 2013) is for the whole family. See the attached flyer for more information.
