Home of the Month

It isn’t often we get to recognize a home that isn’t owner occupied. This month’s exception is 324 14th Street NW. The owners, Ann and Jerry Stachura, live in Taos on the road to Anglefire. The realization has become obvious that as they are getting older, it’s going to be more difficult for them to maintain a rural property. Ann grew up in the downtown neighborhoods of Albuquerque, and felt comfortable buying the home on 14th Street about two and a half years ago with the eye of possibly moving into it in the future. Recently, Mike Diethorn of Parks Landscape & Design was contracted to landscape the front and side yards in a xerisape style, complete with drip irrigation on a timer.

The Downtown Neighborhoods Association appreciates the curb appeal improvements the Stachuras have done to their corner property.

We would like to recognize the Mauger Estate Bed and Breakfast Inn at 701 Roma NW. This classic example of Queen Anne style architecture was built by Maude Talbot in 1897, and bought by Brittania and W.E. Mauger in 1907. The Maugers were in residence until William’s death in 1923, and Britannia continued on until she moved into a smaller house on Maple Street in 1932. The Estate went through a major restoration, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and became a B&B in 1985. Tammy Walden bought the property in 2006, and has made many tasteful changes and updates. Check out her website – for a wonderful place for friends and family to stay when they come to Albuquerque for a visit. They’ll be surrounded by rich woodwork, and enjoy a lavishly comfortable room. On top of getting a full breakfast in the morning, they’ll enjoy wine, cheese and snacks in the evening with the luscious smells of bread and cookies baking in between . It almost makes you want to make a reservation for yourself. Why not?

The Downtown Neighborhoods Association extends it’s appreciation and thanks to the Walden’s for the loving care and maintenance that is given to this treasure in our midst.
