Subject: Wanted to let you know about The Harwood’s 20th Anniversary Party!

DETAILS: Twenty years ago, Kelly (Stone) Trujillo, a teacher at Escuela del Sol Montessori, wondered aloud if the abandoned brick building that fronted her school’s campus could be put to use as a center for local artists.

When Friedje vanGils, the Executive Director of Escuela del Sol Montessori, heard Kelly’s idea she eagerly embraced it. Friedje (pronounced free-j) had long been wondering how to involve Escuela del Sol in the greater Albuquerque community, and definitely needed to find a use for the large unoccupied building on her campus.

After a rigorous community clean up, the building began hosting exhibits for brave artists coming out of the University of New Mexico and elsewhere. In honor of the building’s first identity as The Harwood Girls’ School (a Methodist school for girls), the building’s new artist occupants simply repurposed the name: in 1991 The Harwood Art Center was born.

Now twenty years, hundreds of gallery exhibits, installations, art classes, and community events later, The Harwood Art Center is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. In honor of this landmark occasion, The Harwood and Escuela del Sol want to invite you to their anniversary carnival-esque fiesta.

On Friday May 20th, live bands, face painters, silent film projectors, snow cones, tarot cards, sumo wrestling suits, a jumper, a dunk tank, and a photo booth will descend upon the campus for an evening of 20th Anniversary revelry.

The event is being sponsored by Marble Brewery, a local business with whom The Harwood shares many of its constituents (though not the Montessori students), and will be catered by The Cooperage.

RSVPs for the event are mandatory, and admittance based upon those RSVPs will be strictly enforced. If you would like to receive an invitation to this incredible Anniversary Bash, please contact The Harwood Art Center via the following channels.
