With sub-freezing temperatures predicted the Water authority reminds its customers that it’s time to shut down sprinkler systems for the winter and to prepare household water pipes for cold weather. Fines can be assessed for allowing water (including sprinkler over spray) to freeze on streets and sidewalks. Property owners can also be held legally responsible for damages and injuries that occur as a result of ice hazards.

During sever cold snaps, Water Authority operators take as many as 200 calls per day from people with frozen and burst pipes. Avoid trouble by taking precautions NOW:

Find the master shutoff valve. The master shutoff valve turns off the water to the entire house. Learn its location and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is. this could be critical if a pipe should bursts.

More than 25,000 trees are expected to be recycled at three Albuquerque locations and two Rio Rancho sites during the days following Christmas, saving valuable landfill space generating water-saving and protective mulch.

At the locations, crews from PNM Vegetation Management, City of Albuquerque’s Solid Waste Management Department and Rio Rancho’s Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful Division will ground the trees into mulch, which can then be used to provide a better growing environment for plants in city common areas and residential landscapes.

A meeting of the Traffic Calming Committee with the City Traffic Engineer took place on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011. Neighborhood attendees included: Connie Moore, Curtis Hunt, Linda Rodgers, David Taylor, Rick Miera, and Jerry Ortiz y Pino. Public officials attending were: John Kolessar (traffic engineer), Kelly Sanchez-Pare and Tom Menicucci.

The meeting took place at Connie Moore’s home at 3:30 PM.  We began by emphasizing that the 4th Ward is recognized by both the state and the city as an historic neighborhood that needs to be protected and that the volume and speed of cut-through traffic in the neighborhood is detrimental to this goal.  Previous efforts at traffic calming were summarized and it was noted that traffic volumes in the neighborhood have increased over the last decade despite those efforts.
