/> “We Have No More Heart”: Mescalero Apache Removal, Genocide, and Remembrance
Holocaust & Intolerance Museum of New Mexico , 616 Central Avenue SW Albuquerque
Sponsored by the Office of the State Historian and the Historical Society of NM

For decades scholars of history have studied and explored the Navajos’ Long Walk and forced incarceration by the United States government during the 1860s at Bosque Redondo, New Mexico, shedding new light on the atrocities committed there.
The Mescalero Apaches unique narrative at the Bosque, however, remains largely ignored by modern historians. In this lecture, M. Grace Hunt Watkinson, a master’s student at West Chester University in Pennsylvania in the Holocaust and Genocide Studies program, delves exclusively into the story of the Mescalero Apaches at Bosque Redondo. Grace sheds light on the horrific conditions at the Bosque and explores aspects of the Mescalero chronicle. She also analyzes the challenges of obtaining objective truth from government records and highlights the importance of native testimony when studying genocide in any form. Ultimately, through Grace’s examination of indigenous oral histories, government documents, and the records of Indian agents and the New Mexican citizenry, she reveals a paper trail of government and military stereotyping used not only to validate violence and cultural genocide against the Apache people but also to alter the public image and treatment of the Mescalero Apaches for decades to come.
About the Scholar:

Originally from South Georgia, Margery Grace Hunt Watkinson obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Georgia in 2008. She is currently finishing her Master of Arts in holocaust and genocide studies at West Chester University in Pennsylvania where she resides with her husband Mark. She plans on pursuing her PhD in history, beginning in the fall of 2012, specializing in Native American genocide.

The Office of the State Historian is a division of the State Records Center and Archives. Among the projects administered by the Office of the State Historian is the New Mexico history website, www.newmexicohistory.org. Research is conducted in archival repositories in the state including the State Records Center and Archives; the Center for Southwest Research at UNM; the Fray Angelico History Library; the Rio Grande Collections Archive at New Mexico State University; and others.

ONGOING<br

The program, “Silver Alert,” will assist police, the media and the public in finding missing loved ones who may not be aware of their surroundings.

The caregiver must bring the senior who has already been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s to Barelas Senior Center on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. Our care coordination staff will interview the caregiver/senior to collect information that will be stored on a memory stick for the caregiver to keep. We have set up small quiet areas in the center for the caregiver/senior in hopes of eliminating the anxiety the senior may experience in large crowds.

For detailed information please go to the following website.

http://www.cabq.gov/public-safety/silveralert

Join – Get Involved In Your Community!

News
<guid
