THE ALBUQUERQUE HISTORICAL SOCIETY ENCOURAGES YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THESE PROGRAMS…..JANUARY 27th NEW MEXICO STATEHOOD CENTENNIAL 1912-2012 SUNDAY JANUARY 29, 2:00 p.m.
“We Have No More Heart”: Mescalero Apache Removal, Genocide, and Remembrance
Holocaust & Intolerance Museum of New Mexico , 616 Central Avenue SW Albuquerque
Sponsored by the Office of the State Historian and the Historical Society of NM

For decades scholars of history have studied and explored the Navajos’ Long Walk and forced incarceration by the United States government during the 1860s at Bosque Redondo, New Mexico, shedding new light on the atrocities committed there.
The Mescalero Apaches unique narrative at the Bosque, however, remains largely ignored by modern historians. In this lecture, M. Grace Hunt Watkinson, a master’s student at West Chester University in Pennsylvania in the Holocaust and Genocide Studies program, delves exclusively into the story of the Mescalero Apaches at Bosque Redondo. Grace sheds light on the horrific conditions at the Bosque and explores aspects of the Mescalero chronicle. She also analyzes the challenges of obtaining objective truth from government records and highlights the importance of native testimony when studying genocide in any form. Ultimately, through Grace’s examination of indigenous oral histories, government documents, and the records of Indian agents and the New Mexican citizenry, she reveals a paper trail of government and military stereotyping used not only to validate violence and cultural genocide against the Apache people but also to alter the public image and treatment of the Mescalero Apaches for decades to come.
