Have you noticed anything new and green in our neighborhood lately? During the week of June 15, twenty-two new trees were planted on the landscape strips between the sidewalks and streets in our neighborhood, courtesy of the City. This was the culmination of months of planning, preparing and waiting (big thanks to Gabe Campos for spearheading the project –Ed). It all started in 2008 when state Representative Rick Miera asked the DNA for project ideas for the area. Without hesitation, we seized on the opportunity to enhance our neighborhood through tree beautification. Rep. Mierra was able to secure $10,000 through capital outlay which was directed to the city. The project was on hold for most of last winter through this spring because of economic concerns; but finally, a few days before summer officially began, the money was released and we moved quickly to have the trees planted. We hope to continue the program with future funds.

Members of our community and the DNA Board feel it is particularly important to preserve the old-growth tree canopy that characterizes our neighborhood. According to the City Forester, Nick Kuhn, the Downtown area canopy is one of the largest and healthiest urban canopies in the Southwest. Our tree program will help replace aging trees, especially Chinese Elms, that are reaching their lifespan of about 75 years. This proactive plan address the issue of aging and dying trees now, and will have a positive and lasting impact far into the future.

Special thanks to Nick Kuhn, the city forester, for taking the time to assess each location and for providing appropriate tree options including the necessary follow up care instructions.
